Pea is an annual climbing herb of the genus Pisum in the Fabaceae family. It is also known as Dutch peas, snow peas, Uighur peas, and ear peas. The plant is 0.5~2m tall, the whole plant is green, smooth and hairless, and covered with powder frost. The pinnate compound leaves have 4~6 leaflets. The flowers are solitary or arranged in racemes in the axils of the leaves. The corolla has various colors, mostly white and purple. The pods are swollen and oblong; the seeds are round, green, and turn yellow after drying. The flowering period is June to July, and the fruiting period is July to September.
Peas are native to the area from the Mediterranean region to Afghanistan and are cultivated all over the world; they are cultivated in most parts of China. Peas prefer cool and humid climates, are light-loving, cold-resistant, and drought-resistant. They have a strong adaptability to soil and can grow well in relatively poor land, but they grow poorly on saline-alkali land.
Peas have both edible and medicinal value. Their fresh seeds, tender tips and tender pods can all be eaten as vegetables. They are divided into grain peas, edible tender peas ("sweet peas") and edible tender pods ("snow peas"). Peas and their seedlings, flowers and pods can all be used as medicine. Pea seeds have the effects of harmonizing the middle and lower qi, detoxifying and acting as a diuretic. Peas and their fresh stems and leaves are a favorite feed for various livestock and poultry.
